Description

This listing is for 10 Fantasy Watermelon seeds.  F-1 hybrid, non-genetically modified seed.  These are our extra FEDCO seeds from this season.  We buy in small bulk lots, use what's needed for family, friends, and small co-ops, then sell the remainder at a substantial discount for other growers.  All seed lots have been tested for viability.  This variety has been trialed from several sources to ensure the selection of the best strain.  100% success in the northeast.  All extra seeds are professionally packaged and labeled.  Free USPS First Class shipping to the lower 48.

From FEDCO:

85 days to maturity.  F-1 hybrid.  Northern growers have probably noticed our italicized cautions saying “maybe not really for you” on whopper striped oblong watermelon varieties.  In our own gardens, we never skimp on the tricks of planting good seedlings into black plastic under row cover, yet getting yields of 1 or 2 fully ripe biggies per plant amounts to a good year.  Big news: if our 2018 Zone 4 watermelon trials have any merit, now is your chance to live the watermelon dream.  With extra-sweet deep red flesh and raging watermelon flavor, Fantasy made four times the fruit of production-standard Sangria, and was earlier.  In hot dry 2018, the 7x15" fruits weighed 15 lbs; a little more rain and we could’ve pushed 20+ lbs easy.  Its vigor and yields prove it was bred for organic growing conditions.  But here’s the italic warning: Northern growers could get used to this new watermelon reality.

We don't have the space for Fantasy this season and writing this I'm a bit sorry we didn't start them.  Our neighbors have added the larger La Bestia and we're committed to Quetzali, Diana, and Sugar Baby this season.  Another neighbor is trying Fantasy and it looks good.  Their little seedlings have taken off!  The garden is packed and we don't have the space to play this year.  If this variety is as good as FEDCO says we'll either grow less of something else or expand the fence...LOL.  We're looking forward to seeing what this one will do.  Pictures are not our own but used with permission and will be replaced with our own pictures at the end of the season.

Note: There seems to be a very limited supply Fantasy Watermelon.  We order early and still had to wait.  Looking around the internet I see hardly anyone has the variety.  I guess that explains the limited supply.  If you have the space try some seed saving with this variety.  Grow in a bed by itself a distance away from other melons.

Harvesting watermelon at proper ripeness is an art. Thumping should produce a low, hollow sound. Spread thumb and forefinger and press hard on fruit. If you feel any give, watermelon is ripe.  Also, unripe fruit is heavy; a ripe one is lighter.  Don’t heed the traditional advice to wait for the closest tendril to brown—that may be too late. Minimum germination temperature 60°, optimal range 75–95°.

Shipping and Combined Shipping

NYCfigs ships on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We never 'pass the savings' of expensive shipping charges to the customer and always ship as economically as possible.  Sometimes this becomes a juggling act between cost-of-goods vs. cost-of-container vs. shipment size vs. shipping cost vs. margins.  With combined shipping, it's all in the packing and we'll always find the most inexpensive shipping method available.  But there are times when it's impossible to ship economically and we'll always let you know before paying.  The shipping for all items sold by NYCfigs will combine automatically with all other items purchased from NYCfigs.  Items that ship free can't be discounted.  In the rare instance of excess shipping charges, NYCfigs will refund after the invoice is paid.  This ensures your items are received in a timely manner.
