Golden Cayenne Pepper:
Cayenne peppers are among our favorites simply for their versatility. And we discovered the cayenne's golden cousin definitely doesn't disappoint. We added Golden Cayenne to the garden a few years ago simply for a splash of color and it really surprised us. The eye-catching, smooth-skinned fruits mature from pale green to golden yellow and reach an impressive 4" - 6" long. Like all cayenne's, the Goldie's really packed the heat as they matured. Mature pods are considered moderate and clock in at 30,000-50,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.
Annual. 80 days to maturity. Golden Cayenne grows into a compact and very productive bush. It's a perfect variety for pots and planters. We first grew Golden Cayenne in a deck railing planter. When the fruit started maturing to 4 and 5 inches we were a little worried that we made a mistake. But the short, 2 1/2' to 3' bush really surprised us and held the long fruit very well without support. We were also surprised how Golden Cayenne produced peppers and provided visual interest all summer long. Golden Cayenne pods are elongated, slender, slightly twisted, and taper into a pointed tip. The smooth skin ripens from pale green to bright yellow. Golden Cayenne peppers have a nice smoky flavor and are slightly sweet. Great when used fresh in salsa (salsa really stands out) and hot sauces. But equally wonderful for cooking in southwestern dishes, soups, and can be substituted for serrano, jalapeno, or habanero peppers anytime. Dried pods can be ground into a pretty golden chili powder.
Sow indoors 1/4” deep, 2” apart, 6 weeks before last frost date. Keep at least 60ºF. Transplant to fertile soil 2-4 weeks after the last frost, 18" apart, in rows 2-3’ apart.
