Aji Charapita Pepper:

Aji Charapita is new for us.  We like small hot peppers so we had to see what the fuss is all about.  We've heard this one makes a squat bush that grows perfectly like a weed in a container and produces hundreds of tiny, yellow, pea-like peppers that look more like berries.  We're in, especially with a nickname like Pelotitas Amarillas de Fuego (Little Yellow Fire Balls)!  Aji Charapita produces small, yellow-orange, .25 inch round peppers on a perfect 2' bush.  Charapita hails from the wild Amazonian rainforest regions of northern Peru and is said to be the most expensive pepper in the world selling to chefs in Lima for $20,000 per kilo.  We were a bit skeptical about that claim but everyone seems to make it.  After doing a bit of research we found it has a little merit.  We've discovered live prices for dried pods as high as $10,000/lb and low as $15/ounce.  $10,000 is a bit nutty.  But, even $15 per ounce puts dried pods at $240/lb.  That's nothing to sneeze at.  Fresh peppers are supposed to sport a fruity, citrus aroma, strong fruity flavor, and equal in heat to cayenne peppers.  That places Aji Charapita around 30,000-50,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.  According to what we've read, Aji Charapita's is best used fresh in salsas and sauces or dried and ground into a powder.

Annual. 90 days to maturity.  Sow indoors 1/4” deep, 2” apart, 8-12 weeks before last frost date.  Keep at least 80ºF.  Transplant to fertile soil 2-4 weeks after the last frost, 18" apart, in rows 2-3’ apart.
