This is a very flavorful dark purple fig, flavor similar to VdB. Reportedly found growing and hardy at 600 meter elevation in the foothills of the Italian Alps. For me in zone 6a it has not been very hardy, dying to the ground two years in a row with the same protection that preserved above ground growth of Mt Etna figs, Florea and Salem White; last year it regrew slowly and did not produce ripe figs before fall frost. Others farther south have reported fruiting after die back. Nero 600m has the tendency to show two different mature leaf forms. Usually the leaves have long fingers, but often there will be a branch or shoot adjacent to the others where the leaves are all palmate or of a single lobe.

I’ve been growing and trialing figs in southwestern Wisconsin for 30 years. My focus was on container figs which will ripen in Wisconsin without a greenhouse, but now that I have an unheated hoophouse & I’ve been putting many varieties in the ground.
I run a Facebook group called NORTHERN FIG GROWERS which has 13K+ members. I also sell cuttings of currants, grapes, elderberries, willows, kiwis and scionwood of pears and mulberries.
