Description

All my figs are container grown in Wisconsin. Cuttings were taken in  November after trees had gone dormant and have been stored in a fridge at 37-40 degrees. You are bidding on 2 dormant unrooted cuttings of 'LSU Champagne'.

‘Champagne’ is a selection from a group of seedlings derived from a cross of 'Celeste' x 'C1’ (a Capri fig from California). The cross was made in 1955 and the selection made by Ed O'Rourke in 1959 and tested as L55-13-22.

‘Champagne’ produces good quality, 30-40mm diameter, moderate size (23 gms) yellow fruit. The fruit of ‘Champagne’ (Figure 3) have a slightly round distal end and tapers slightly toward the stem end with a short neck. The fruit has a partially closed eye (ostiole) on mature fruit. Internal color is tan to caramel color when soft ripe.

*********************************

I’ve been growing and trialing figs in southwestern Wisconsin for 30 years. My focus was on container figs which will ripen in Wisconsin without a greenhouse, but now that I have an unheated hoophouse & I’ve been putting many varieties in the ground.

I run a Facebook group called NORTHERN FIG GROWERS which has 10K+ members.  I also sell cuttings of currants, grapes, elderberries, willows, kiwis and scionwood of pears and mulberries.
