Appleoosa Apple Scion, Red Fleshed Grenadine x Lady Williams Seedling (#1)

This apple can have solid pink flesh, similar to grenadine, although I have also seen it express as mottled pink and white.  It is probably the most like Grenadine in flavor out of all my grenadine seedlings, with berry and fruit punch flavors.  The flavor is quite complex and delicious.  In 2023, the red flesh did not develop as well as it has previously, but the flavor was still very strong and excellent.  That is a good sign, because typically, the more the red flesh expresses, the stronger the flavors will be.

It seems to be better than Albert Etter's Grenadine in general and in many ways is like an improved version of that apple.  It still does have fairly high tannins in the skin still, but less than Grenadine.  The texture is not bad, but it doesn't hold up in storage or with long ripening, again though, it is better than Grenadine in that regard.  The appearance is somewhat different in that Grenadine is pink on the outside because the flesh color shines through the translucent skin, while Appleoosa is already red on the outside.  It can be somewhat streaky as well, though it will often have Grenadines big white speckles, thus the name Appleoosa, like the horse.  That was originally just a cute joke name, but it stuck and I like it well enough.  Fortunately, this apple did not inherit Grenadine's very annoying trait of early drops.  The season seems to be some time in late fall to early winter.

My overall assessment of this apple so far is that it is an improvement on Grenadine, while retaining some of that apples positive traits.  That was one of my original breeding goals.  I now use apples like Appleoosa, Vanilla Pink and Black Strawberry for breeding instead of Grenadine, because they are a step in the right direction.

This is an experimental variety for the adventurous.  I can tell you though, that I thoroughly enjoyed eating the crop this year because the flavor can be very strong and fun.  Given how few good red fleshed apples there are out there right now, it definitely seems worth growing out in different places to see how it performs.  As far as breeding goes, it brings quite a bit to the table.  It has the potential to have solid pink flesh.  It can have a very strong and complex fruity flavor that only a few apples could level up to.  It is a nice sized apple.  It is attractive.  It also ripens late-ish and it’s parent Lady Williams is extremely late, hanging on the tree here into February.  It should also be good for cider, at least as a blender and in cooking.
