Zaffiro is one of the best if not the best honey, maple syrup type figs of all. It does well in cold zones and is early to mid season. It dehydrates on the tree and have yet to have one spoil. It’s a common fig that does not require pollination.
So, Hurricane Hillary left us with about a dozen trees with damage. Mostly collapsed limbs. So my loss is your gain. These trees are lignified with Zaffiro having its notorious green swirling in some of the wood. The summer cuttings need to be rooted quickly but the reward is just that. Roots quickly. I prefer rooting in the summer and hears why.
Best time in Fresno for cuttings is after they fruit. Take lignified cuttings and use the direct potting method. They root quickly and by winter I can get a 5 gallon size tree. Using the outdoor heat and shade this is the easiest and most successful way to root cuttings in FRESNO CA . I can let the tree go dormant in winter and plant in spring. The tree will flourish because the rootball will be big. I’ve been doing it for years. Made a video on it as well. And yes, this will not work in all zones.
I recommend grafting a piece as well. I’m going to include instructions.
You get 2 cuttings 6-8” pencil to sharpie size. Not big fat cuttings!
