Sangue Dolce figs have a dark, dusty purple exterior and deep red interior. It is no wonder that founder, Dom, gave this fig the Italian name meaning “sweet blood.” It is said that Dom, a fig enthusiast and retired NYC detective, got this variety from overseas as an unknown. This variety has become more popular in the states because it is very productive and ripens early. Although it ripens early, it is best to wait until this variety is slightly shriveled to pick them to ensure optimum flavor.
