Description

This listing is for 10 seeds of Early Moonbeam Watermelon.  100% organic, non-genetically modified seed.  These are our extra FEDCO seeds from this season.  We buy in small bulk lots, use what's needed for family, friends, and small co-ops, then sell the remainder at a substantial discount for other growers.  All seed lots have been tested for viability.  This variety has been trialed from several sources to ensure the selection of the best strain.  100% success in the northeast.  All extra seeds are professionally packaged and labeled.  Free USPS First Class shipping to the lower 48.

We love growing consistently sweet ice-box melons.  Diana is our favorite, followed by Sugar Baby, then Yellow Doll.  Since erecting a solid deer fence our watermelon patch has grown considerably (there's always room for one more, right?) and we decided to add Early Moonbeam.  Early Moonbeam promises 5-8 pound melons with a brix of 9.9 which is sure to please the kids.  From what we're seeing it comes in early, too.  Yellow to Yellow/Orange flesh which is alway a crowd pleaser.  I guess we'll know by the end of the season if this one is a keeper.

From our supplier:

Open-pollinated stabilized selection from Yellow Doll, one of breeder Alan Kapuler’s notable successes in de-hybridizing. Kapuler retained most of Doll’s strengths including earliness, icebox size (5–8 lb), sweet yellow flesh and colorful skin of dark green stripes on a greenish-white background, while sacrificing only a scintilla of uniformity and flavor. Brix reading of 9.9 at WSU trials.

Harvesting watermelon at proper ripeness is an art. Thumping should produce a low, hollow sound. Spread thumb and forefinger and press hard on fruit. If you feel any give, the watermelon is ripe.  Also, unripe fruit is heavy; a ripe one is lighter.  Don’t heed the traditional advice to wait for the closest tendril to brown—that may be too late. Minimum germination temperature 60°, optimal range 75–95°.

Shipping and Combined Shipping

NYCfigs ships on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We never 'pass the savings' of expensive shipping charges to the customer and always ship as economically as possible.  Sometimes this becomes a juggling act between cost-of-goods vs. cost-of-container vs. shipment size vs. shipping cost vs. margins.  With combined shipping, it's all in the packing and we'll always find the most inexpensive shipping method available.  But there are times when it's impossible to ship economically and we'll always let you know before paying.  The shipping for all items sold by NYCfigs will combine automatically with all other items purchased from NYCfigs.  Items that ship free can't be discounted.  In the rare instance of excess shipping charges, NYCfigs will refund after the invoice is paid.  This ensures your items are received in a timely manner.
