Description

Another prized Portuguese fig originating from the Point Loma area in San Diego, California. Brought to the US prior to the 1940”s, this fig was propagated by Lawrence Andersen (Uncle Corky) and originally distributed thru Walter Andersen Nursery his nephew. This medium sized green fig has a light amber interior is is consisting of a honey taste. While prolific in fruit production it is considered a slow growing tree.

Found in the back yard of Grandma Andersen's home in the Midway district in the early forties, my Uncle Corky (the late Lawrence Andersen) soon began propagating this wonderful fig by making cuttings for the rest of the Andersen family.Occasionally Corky would bring a few of his trees into the Rosecrans St. nursery to sell. They'd be gone in a flash! People loved the figs! The fig trees grew and produced two crops a year, usually in June and again in late summer, in late August or September. The flesh, amber in color, is sweet and succulent with a back- note of honey flavoring. The skin is a succulent greenish color [often referred to as white as opposed to the black-skinned varieties].Many of these Uncle Corky's Figs, as we used to call them, or Corky's Figs flourish in the Point Loma area and now we have trade-marked them and they are available for everyone. The tree grows fairly fast and, in good soil, does very well along the coast as well as all other areas. In its current incarnation, you will never be disappointed in the little fig tree that could could...it's now all grown up into the Corky's Honey Delight Fig, the name is an homage to both our beloved Uncle Corky and the wonderful flavor of the fig produced by this great tree. This is one great fig and will convert even seriously non-fig-loving folks! Try it and you'll never eat any other fig!Enjoy! From a sign at Walter Andersen Nursery, Point Loma, San Diego, California

The first two photos is the actual tree being sold. This tree has been grown from a cutting started at the end of November. Please note this tree is sold from the East Coast and is currently not effected by the Black Fig Fly spreading thru California. While cuttings sold from California are not effected, the BFF larva can be found in the soil of the potted trees. More information on the Black Fig Fly can be found on the OurFig  Forum.

Bidding is open to the lower 48 states only. I do not ship to Hawaii, California or Alaska. NO international shipping. The trees are shipped in soil so know your states agricultural restrictions. More information on this variety can be found on the ourfigs forum or the figs4fun forum mobile website. I am DaveL on the forums

*****I will do my best to protect the tree during shipping, however, I recommend someone to be home for delivery or arrange with your post office to have your package held for a pickup at the post office.  Please gradually introduce your tree to sun, wind or temperature changes. I deliver trees directly to my local PO to ship.******

In an effort to control the spread FMV by various mites, I have treated my trees with neem oil spray as a fungicide and with the spinoza Monterey Garden Spray as a miticide. Both are recommended for organic gardening. However as a precaution, I recommend that you isolate all new trees and plants from your collection for a short period of time to insure no issues. It is not unusual for fig trees to exhibit mild FMV.

***** Buy more than one tree and save. For every two trees purchased from me, the second tree ships for free, any variety.  Do not make payment until I adjust the invoice.*****
